Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers odds, picks and predictions

The Detroit Red Wings (7-4-1) take on the New York Rangers (8-2-1) Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's lines around the Red Wings vs. Rangers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings are coming off a 5-4 win over the Boston Bruins Saturday. Before that win, the Wings were 1-3-1 in their last 5 games. C Dylan Larkin had a goal and an assist in the game, but he was forced to exit with an upper-body injury. His status for this one is unknown.

The Rangers are also dealing with injuries to major cogs as D Adam Fox is on LTIR with a lower-body injury, and tendy Igor Shesterkin is day-to-day with a lower-body ailment. They suffered a shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild Saturday. That snapped a 6-game winning streak.

Red Wings at Rangers projected goalies

Ville Husso (5-2-1, 3.37 GAA, .896 SV%) vs. Jonathan Quick (2-0-1, 1.42 GAA, .948 SV%, 1 SO)

Husso was in net for the big win over the Bruins Saturday. He stopped 26 of 30 shots and has won 2 starts in a row. He was 1-1-0 with a 4.51 GAA and .859 SV% in 2 starts against the Rangers last season. He was brilliant in the win, stopping 30 of 31 and was roughed up for 8 goals on 33 shots in the other.

Shesterkin was a surprise participant in practice Monday and could get the call in goal, but the 37-year-old Quick has been great in his absence. He stopped 36 of 40 shots in the shootout loss Saturday against the Wild. He stopped 56 of 57 shots in his 3 other appearances. He beat the Wings in his only appearance against them last year, stopping 29 of 33 shots.

Red Wings at Rangers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

Larkin didn't practice Monday, but he's expected to make the trip. I'd say he's doubtful to play in this one, and that's a big blow. The Wings have won in MSG twice over the last couple of years, but I don't like the feel of it without Larkin. The Rangers' defense is 3rd in the NHL with 2.1 goals per game and 4th at 27.5 shots per game.

Take the RANGERS -160.

Puck line/Against the spread

I don't like either side of the puck line here. I don't trust New York's offense or goaltending to roll past Detroit, and the Wings' puck line is a little too juicy for the amount of risk.

There is a chalky prop bet I love, though. LW David Perron will be leaned upon more, especially on the power play, with Larkin possibly out. He has 3+ shots in 3 straight games. Take PERRON OVER 1.5 SHOTS (-175).

Over/Under

There are too many variables that could sway this either way. If Shesterkin starts, or if Larkin is able to play, the pendulum swings in each direction.

AVOID.
