New Jersey Devils at Detroit Red Wings odds, picks and predictions

The New Jersey Devils (8-7-1) travel to meet the Detroit Red Wings (8-6-3) at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's lines around the Devils vs. Red Wings odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Devils suffered a 5-3 loss at home against the New York Rangers on Saturday in the most recent meeting, cashing the Over for the 3rd consecutive outing. New Jersey has dropped 4 of the past 5 games overall.

The Red Wings were tripped up 3-2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs last time out Friday at Avicii Arena in Stockholm and Detroit managed to grab just 1 point out of a possible 4 in Sweden, while going 1-2-2 in the past 5 games overall, while hitting the Over in 4 of the past 6 contests.

Devils at Red Wings projected goalies

Vitek Vanecek (7-4-0, 3.38 GAA, .889 SV%) vs. Alex Lyon (0-1-0, 3.08 GAA, .897 SV%)

Vanecek allowed 4 goals on 34 shots in the 5-3 loss at home against the Rangers, and he has managed a 3-2-0 record with a 3.52 GAA and .882 SV% in 6 starts in the month of November. He faced the Red Wings in his first outing on Oct. 12, allowing 3 goals on 35 shots in a 4-3 win at MSG.

Lyon made his 1st start for the Winged Wheel in Sweden against the Leafs, allowing 3 goals on 29 shots in the loss on Friday. He is confirmed to start Wednesday's contest in Motown. Ville Husso is away from the team for the birth of a child, with James Reimer backing up Lyon.

Devils at Red Wings picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 4, Red Wings 3

Moneyline

The DEVILS (-155) are a strong play behind Vanecek, especially going against the unproven Lyon, who is just starting to get his feet wet with the Red Wings (+125).

While New Jersey has won just once in the past 5 games, it is 4-1 in the past 5 games when playing on 3 or more days of rest, while cashing in 4 of the past 5 games inside the Atlantic Division, too.

Detroit has managed just 2 wins in the past 7 at home, while going 0-5 in the past 5 games on 3 or more days of rest. The road team has won 5 of the past 6 meetings in this series, too.

Puck line/Against the spread

The RED WINGS +1.5 (-175) are a little on the pricey side, but they're not past my personal limit for a standalone bet. If you want a little insurance on the home side, they're not a terrible play since the Devils -1.5 (+145) haven't exactly been on fire.

Over/Under

I expect the Total 7 to fall right on the number, so AVOID.

If there was a lean, it would be to the Over. The total has gone high in 9 of the past 12 games on the road for the Devils, while going 4-1 in the past 5 meetings with the Red Wings.

The Over has cashed at a 14-6-1 pace in the past 21 home games for the Red Wings, while going 4-0 in the past 4 games against Metropolitan Division opponents.
