Oakland at Michigan State odds, picks and predictions

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies (6-5) and Michigan State Spartans (5-5) clash in an intrastate non-conference affair Monday in East Lansing. Opening tipoff at the Breslin Center is at 7 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook's lines around the Oakland vs. Michigan State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Oakland has not played since Dec. 8 when it snapped a 2-game losing streak in a 77-63 win at Eastern Michigan. The Grizzlies were favored by 6 1/2 in that game; they are 9-2 against the spread (ATS) this season.

After being ranked No. 4 in the preseason Paste BN Sports Coaches Poll, the Spartans scuffled early, losing 2 of their 1st 3 games and eventually 5 of their first 9 (a program-worst since 2003). Michigan State last played on Saturday when it was a 2 1/2-point underdog against Baylor. MSU logged a 71.4% effective field-goal mark in routing the No. 6 Bears 88-64 on home-away-from-home neutral hardwood (Detroit).

Oakland at Michigan State picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 80, Oakland 61

Moneyline

PASS.

Michigan state is under-.500 ATS (4-6), and the Under has cashed in 7 of its 10 games. This one sets up for pushback on both fronts.

Against the spread

KenPom still has MSU tagged as a top-25 unit, and the Spartans showed that in Saturday's win over Baylor. KenPom has a luck rating, which it defines as a measure of the deviation between a team's actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. Michigan State ranks 357th (that's out-of-the-norm bad luck) in this rating.

Oakland is a solid 1st-division team (top-half of NCAA-I hoops) that has played a tough slate so far. But that schedule has been tilted toward slightly lesser defensive teams. Look for the Grizzlies to have all kinds of trouble against this Spartan defense, which KenPom rates as 9th on the efficiency scale.

At the other end of the floor, a maybe-dealing-with-rust Oakland has not been particularly adept at defending inside. Expect Michigan State to pile up some points in high-percentage looks. And look for an angry, feeling-underrated MSU five to be unsatisfied with any kind of 2-touchdown lead midway through the 2nd half.

BACK THE SPARTANS -16.5 (-110).

Over/Under

A slow-tempo game without a lot of 3s is expected, and that's reflected in this total. But against good opponents the Grizzlies have been capable enough from the perimeter in a couple games when trailing that they could be a live wire in that regard.

On the Michigan State side, look for a lot of high-quality looks and a decent number of turnover/transition buckets. The Breslin Center is usually a significant home-venue edge, and the Spartans are playing at home for the 1st time since Nov. 28.

BACK THE OVER 138.5 (-110).
