Houston at BYU odds, picks and predictions

The Houston Cougars (16-2, 3-2 Big 12) and BYU Cougars (14-4, 2-3) meet Tuesday at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (Big 12 Network|ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook's lines around the Houston vs. BYU odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

Houston picked up a 57-42 win against UCF last time out on Saturday, just missing the cover as 17.5-point home favorites. It was a microcosm of what the Cougars do, however. Houston plays lockdown defense, better than anybody in the nation, and it does just enough offensively to get the job done. It is still just 1-3 against the spread (ATS) in the past 4 games, while the Under is 3-1 in the past 4, too.

BYU lost 85-78 on the road Saturday against Texas Tech, losing outright as a 2-point underdog, and these Cougars are just 2-3 straight up (SU) while going 1-4 ATS in the past 5 outings. The Under has connected in 3 of the past 5 contests, too.

Houston is No. 4 and BYU is No. 19 in the Paste BN Sports Coaches Poll.

Houston at BYU picks and predictions

Prediction

Houston 69, BYU 64

Moneyline

HOUSTON (-134) is worth a play straight up if you don't want to fiddle around with the points in this battle of Cougars. UH has won 2 straight at home after dropping a pair of games at Iowa State and TCU. While Houston has looked very ordinary on the road, it is still worth a look in this 1st official matchup as fellow conference members.

Against the spread

HOUSTON -2.5 (-104) continues to throw a blanket on teams defensively, leading the nation by allowing just 51.0 PPG while limiting teams to just 34.3% from the field. UH is holding teams to just 27.9% from behind the 3-point line, too.

Offensively, Houston isn't the most gifted team, but it doesn't have to be, either. The Cougars do so well defensively, Houston doesn't have to be great at the offensive end.

BYU +2.5 (-118) has dropped 3 of the past 5 games, while failing to cover in 4 of the past 5 outings. BYU is 0-2 ATS in 2 games as an underdog this season, losing each of the outings outright.

Over/Under

UNDER 135.5 (-110) is worth a look mostly due to the fact Houston has tremendous defense.

The Over is 4-3 in the past 7 games for BYU, while going 3-1 in the past 4 outings at the Marriott Center. However, it hasn't faced a D anywhere close to Houston.

The Under has cashed in 5 of the past 7 games for Houston, while the Under has hit in all 3 true road games to date.
