Super Bowl 58 first look: San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs odds and lines

The No. 1 seed San Francisco 49ers (14-5) of the NFC meet the No. 3 seed Kansas City Chiefs (14-6) of the AFC at Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11. Kickoff from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we look at 49ers vs. Chiefs odds from BetMGM Sportsbook before making our expert NFL picks and predictions later in the week.

The 49ers found themselves in a deep hole at home in the NFC Championship Game, trailing 24-7 at halftime against the Detroit Lions.

San Francisco leveled the score with 17 points in the third quarter, and it rattled off a total of 27 unanswered points to take a 34-24 lead before Detroit finally responded. The Lions grabbed the backdoor cover with a WR Jameson Williams TD with 56 seconds left in regulation, but the 49ers obviously came away with the bigger prize.

49ers QB Brock Purdy threw for 267 yards and a TD to WR Brandon Aiyuk, who made a crazy circus catch in the 3rd quarter to set up another score. RB Christian McCaffrey totaled 132 scrimmage yards with a pair of rushing scores.

The Chiefs fired out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter in Baltimore on a QB Patrick Mahomes to TE Travis Kelce scoring connection. Baltimore answered back with a score to even the score, but Kansas City took a 17-7 lead right before half. It never trailed, holding off the Ravens in Baltimore for a 17-10 win, cashing +140 to +185 on the moneyline depending on when your bet was placed.

49ers vs. Chiefs head-to-head

This is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV in Miami Gardens, Fla. Mahomes and the Chiefs picked up a 31-20 win against the 49ers in that game, posting 397 total yards. A lot has changed since then, as the Chiefs receivers were led by WR Tyreek Hill, now in Miami, while RB Damien Williams ran for over 100 yards with a score, and he last appeared in 3 games in October with the Arizona Cardinals.

For the 49ers, QB Jimmy Garoppolo, RB Raheem Mostert and WR Kendrick Bourne were the stat leaders on offense, and each are on different NFL rosters these days. A lot changes in terms of personnel, even in just a 4-year span.

Since Oct. 1, 2006, the Chiefs have won 5 of the past 6 meetings, while also covering 5 of those games. Perhaps the most important game was a 44-23 win in Santa Clara by the Chiefs on Oct. 23, 2022, since it's the most recent meeting, and involves much of the same personnel, although Jimmy G, not Purdy, started that day, too.

The 49ers will be making their 8th Super Bowl appearance, including 5 victories. They won their first 5 appearances in the big game before 2 straight losses, including 2020 against the Chiefs.

The Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champs, topping the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 12, 2023. The Chiefs are searching for their 4th Lombardi Trophy, and 3rd since the win over the Niners on Feb. 2, 2020.
