Charlotte at Memphis odds, picks and predictions

The Charlotte 49ers (17-8, 11-2 American) and Memphis Tigers (18-8, 7-6) meet Wednesday at FedEx Forum. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook's lines around the Charlotte vs. Memphis odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and best bets.

The 49ers enter play just a game behind USF for the top spot in the AAC with 5 games left to play. Charlotte has won 3 in a row since a tough 72-69 loss to USF in Tampa Feb. 6, but the 49ers are just 1-3 against the spread (ATS) in the previous 4 outings. The Over is on a 3-1 run for the Niners.

The Tigers had been ranked inside the top 15 as recently as mid-January, but Memphis has been in freefall since a 74-73 loss to USF Jan. 18 at FedEx Forum. The Tigers are just 3-6 straight up (SU) in the past 9 games, while going 2-13 ATS across the previous 15 outings.

The Over has hit in 4 straight for Memphis, and the Tigers have allowed at least 74 points in 10 of the past 11 contests. At home, though, Memphis has cashed the Under in 3 of the past 4 outings.

This is the 1st meeting between these new AAC rivals since playing in Memphis Dec. 31, 2011, when the Tigers won 67-58 but came up short as 10.5-point favorites with the Under (146) cashing.

Charlotte at Memphis picks and predictions

Prediction

Memphis 69, Charlotte 66

Moneyline

Charlotte (+190) is a tempting play for the opportunity to nearly double up your initial wager. However, we're going to trust Memphis (-235) to pull out of its nosedive and get the job done on its home floor. However, it's not wise to risk a -235 price on a Tigers team which has been extremely erratic for the past 5 weeks.

PASS.

Against the spread

CHARLOTTE +5.5 (-110) is in play for the top seed in the AAC Tournament, while Memphis is simply trying to get back into the postseason picture after a stunning fall from grace.

The 49ers aren't a great offensive team -- averaging only 69.8 points per game (PPG) -- and that's a bit concerning in a marquee game. While the Tigers are not the same team it was around the holidays, this is still a huge measuring-stick game on the road for Charlotte. The 49ers win with defense -- yielding 64.8 PPG to rank 22nd nationally -- and they'll bring plenty of that to Memphis in a near-miss.

Over/Under

UNDER 144.5 (-105) is the strongest play in this AAC battle.

The Tigers have allowed 74 or more points in 10 of the past 11 outings, but the 49ers simply aren't a big-time offense capable of running up and down the floor. They're meticulous, and take care of the ball, but they're also very methodical and plodding. This won't be a track meet, no matter how badly Memphis wants that.
