New York Islanders at Dallas Stars odds, picks and predictions

The New York Islanders (23-20-14) will try and keep their slim playoff hopes alive as they hit the road to take on the Dallas Stars (35-16-8) Monday. Puck drop at American Airlines Center is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook's lines around the Islanders vs. Stars odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Isles possess just a 5.7% chance at making the postseason according to Moneypuck.com after losing 5 of their last 6 games. New York lost 4-2 as a slight -104 home underdog to Tampa Bay Saturday with the Under (6.5) hitting.

Dallas snapped a 4-game losing streak Saturday by doubling up Carolina 2-1 as a +119 road underdog. The Stars boast the 2nd-highest goals for per 60 in the NHL (2.9), and no team in the Western Conference wins faceoffs at a higher percentage (54.63%).

In the last Islanders-Stars meeting, New York won at home 3-2 in OT, cashing as a (-113) favorite and the Under (6) cashing Jan. 21.

Islanders at Stars projected goalies

Ilya Sorokin (17-13-11, 3.14 GAA, .909 SV%) vs. Scott Wedgewood (13-6-4, 2.97 GAA, .899 SV%)

Sorokin, who has just 1 win in his last 4 starts, has made the most saves in the NHL (1260) while allowing the 2nd-most goals (127). In coach Patrick Roy's 1st game behind the Isles bench, the 28-year-old stopped 41 shots in the OT victory over Dallas last month.

Wedgewood has not earned a victory in over a month. The 31-year-old last earned a win Jan. 20, defeating his former team in the New Jersey Devils 6-2.  He would go on to start a day later against the Islanders in the aforementioned 3-2 OT loss as New York's 2nd-leading scorer C Bo Horvat fired in the game winner.

Islanders at Stars picks and predictions

Prediction

Stars 4, Islanders 3

Moneyline

BET STARS (-170).

It's a good amount of juice, so pairing the Dallas moneyline with the Edmonton Oilers (-162 at home vs LA Kings) in a parlay could make some sense. Expect Stars captain LW Jamie Benn, who wins faceoffs at a 62% clip to extend his point-streak to 5 games against the NHL's worst penalty kill unit (71.43 PK%) in the Isles.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

While I'm willing to risk the juice on the Stars' ML, I'm not willing to do so in asking the Islanders to cover in getting a goal and a half (-166), even with Dallas going with their backup netminder. Plus, despite having slim playoff chances, the Islanders have trailed the 6th-least number of minutes per game this regular season.

It's tough to see a scenario where Dallas gets a multiple-goal lead, I would rather TAKE A SHOT on YES to OT (+370).

Over/Under

BET OVER -6.5 (-110).

An extra period with the teams tied at 3 would ensure the Over, but I would feel comfortable even if Dallas wins in regulation due to their success this season when a net is empty (7 goals). Roy made the decision to pull Sorokin with over 7 minutes to play vs. Tampa Saturday down 3 goals, so tight game or not there is a strong chance for empty netters.
