It started with a way to celebrate Earth Day. It turned into a weekly tradition that changed the lives of a town.

Every Wednesday morning in Portland, Oregon, Physical Education teacher Sam Balto leads a caravan of elementary students from Alameda Elementary School riding their bikes to school. The sounds of music playing, kids laughing and residents cheering from the sidelines can be heard as more than 170 kids (and counting) pedal their way to school.

Watch these elementary kids bike together to school!

Coach Balto originally created the “bike bus” to honor Earth Day by creating less pollution and congestion with cars dropping off students at school. When it became one of the favorite ways for the kids to get to school, they realized all the good that could come from this unique idea. And it soon became a beloved weekly tradition!

Biking to school promotes physical activity while continuing to strengthen the community.

So, hop on the "bus," we're going to school…on bikes! The environmentally-friendly, healthy and fun new way to get to school for this town is proving to be just what the community needed.
