King beats former champion at Guangzhou Open
GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — American qualifier Vania King advanced to the second round of the Guangzhou Open by beating 2011 champion Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 Monday.
Scheepers finished the match with 10 double-faults.
Defending champion Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan also reached the second round, beating Paula Ormaechea of Argentina 6-1, 6-2, while eighth-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico defeated Nadiya Kichenok of Ukraine 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).
Johanna Konta of Britain, Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic, Zhang Shuai of China and Galina Voskobeva of Kazakhstan also won.
Korea Open
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Unseeded Lara Arruabarrena of Spain advanced to the second round of the Korea Open by beating fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 Monday.
The 113th-ranked Arruabarrena had lost to Svitolina in their only previous meeting in New Haven this year.
Also, third-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Sixth-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany, Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania and Vera Dushevina of Russia also advanced.
