Denis Istomin on to Nottingham final after Marcos Baghdatis retires

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — Denis Istomin advanced to the final of the Nottingham Open on Friday when defending champion Marcos Baghdatis retired early in their semifinal match with a left calf injury.

Baghdatis, who was on a nine-match winning streak at the Wimbledon warm-up tournament, was leading 2-1 with a break in the first set when he pulled up after making a serve. He received treatment and retired.

"I felt my calf pop," Baghdatis said. "I was feeling good, I was happy, everything was going my way and I was a break up early in the match. It's just the way it is."

Baghdatis said he will make a decision about playing at Wimbledon after seeing doctors on Saturday. The 2006 Australian Open runner-up and Wimbledon semifinalist was drawn Friday to face U.S. player Donald Young in the first round.

The No. 92-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan, who is unseeded at Nottingham, will play either Sam Querrey of the United States or Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in Saturday's final.
