The exodus of the top players in women's tennis continues at the French Open as seventh-seeded Serena Williams was upset Sunday by 21-year-old Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

The season's second Grand Slam event already had top-ranked Ashleigh Barty retire from her second-round match due to a hip injury and No. 2 Naomi Osaka withdraw after the first round for mental health reasons.

In search of her record-tying 24th Grand Slam singles title, Williams had her serve broken five times by Rybakina in a 6-3, 7-5 defeat.

Williams has won the French Open three times, but hasn’t made it past the fourth round since she was the runner-up in 2016.

Rybakina, the No. 21 seed, has won all four of her matches at Roland Garros this year without losing a set.
