Watch: Andrey Rublev hits one of the best shots in Wimbledon history
Andrey Rublev just hit one of the greatest shots in Wimbledon's storied history during the fourth round of play on Sunday.
Up 5-4 late in the fifth and final set against No. 23 Alexander Bublik, No. 7 Rublev hit a diving forehand winner that sent the Wimbledon crowd screaming and Bublik speechless.
The two engaged in a 11-shot rally that seemed to be over after what seemed to be a down-the-line backhand winner from Bublik. No one would have complained if Rublev couldn't reach the shot because of it's pace and placement. But, Rublev dove toward the ball and put his racket on it, leaving it over the net and in play with a forehand to win the point.
“It was probably the most lucky shot ever. I don’t know. It was luck, nothing else… I don’t think I can do it one more time,” Rublev said after the match.
Bublik, like many in attendance, couldn't believe the shot. Many in the crowd immediately leapt out of their seats, giving him a standing ovation.
The shot led to match point for Rublev, who defeated Bublik 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 in one of the best matches of the tournament. The match lasted 3 hours and 17 minutes and ended in Rublev reaching his first career Wimbledon quarterfinals.
He will play the winner of No. 2 Novak Djokovic and No. 17 Hubert Hurkacz on Tuesday.
