Hulu names Andy Forssell as acting CEO

Hulu, an online video streaming website, said Thursday its senior vice president of content, Andy Forssell, will be promoted as acting chief executive officer.

Jason Kilar, a former Amazon executive who has served as Hulu's only CEO since its founding in 2007, had announced his intent to resign in January in a company blog post and said he will stay on the job until the end March. Kilar didn't specify why he was stepping down, but the decision is likely due to a possible change in company ownership.

In an updated blog post Thursday, Kilar said "a permanent decision" on the CEO position will be made after Hulu's primary owners - Disney and News Corp. - decide on future plans for the company as it continues to grow amid stiff competition from Netflix and other streaming startups.

"Disney and News Corp. are currently finalizing their forward-looking plans with Hulu, and the senior team has been working closely with them in that process," he wrote.

In charge of Hulu's content, Forssell was a key figure in expanding its library of titles. The number of Hulu's content partners grew from two in 2007 to more than 410, the company said.

Despite the leadership change, Hulu is on its way to setting new records in revenue and subscriber additions in the first quarter, Kilar wrote.
