Weekend listening - Apple Watch, Google, RSA meet
LOS ANGELES - It was a big news week in Techland, and we're here to replay and analyze it all for you, in audio form.
Let's start with the release of the most heavily hyped new tech product of 2015, the Apple Watch, which started shipping to consumers this week. I went to Cupertino to pick up my review copy at Apple headquarters, and then dashed over to the offices of Smugmug, a top photo sharing site, to pass it around to some really geeky guys who work there. We got the reaction from Don and Chris MacAskill, the son and father team who run the place, along with some of their top engineers. Don had pre-ordered his at 12:01 midnight on April 11th, but was told the watch wouldn't arrive until June.
After our Smugmug visit, I spent more time with the watch, shooting a bunch of videos to show off new features, but was having a hard time with a device that's just not as intuitive and easy to use as past Apple products like the iPhone and iPad. My report:
The week began with tales of "Mobilegeddon,"--Google changing its ranking system to promote mobile friendly websites at the top of mobile search results, and penalizing sites that aren't as hip to mobile. We checked in with Danny Sullivan, the founding editor of SearchEngineLand, for a status update.
Google continued making news, announcing a new low-cost mobile service with Sprint and T-Mobile that could be as low as $20 monthly. In her weekly Tech Deep Dive, editor Laura Mandaro checks in with our Ed Baig for the download. Mandaro also chats with Elizabeth Weise about the RSA cyber-security conference in San Francisco.
Finally, we end back on the Apple Watch, where I compare notes with Baig, who is a fan of the new device, about my frustrations.
And here's my status update, after living with the Watch for 2 days.
