Report: Uber bids for Nokia's Here map service

Add one more bidder for Nokia's maps service Here: the ride-hailing giant Uber.

According to The New York Times, citing "three people with knowledge of the offer," Uber entered a bid as much as $3 billion. News of Uber's bid follows an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal claiming three German car makers are prepping a joint bid for Here.

Here is essentially Nokia's take on Google Maps, providing details on locations from around the world and including features such as turn-by-turn navigation.

As the report notes, Here would give Uber a significant advantage in quickly matching drivers with customers. Uber relies on mapping data from Google Maps, Apple and other resources.

In March, Uber acquired mapping service deCarta for an undisclosed sum.

As for Nokia, if a Here sale is completed, this would be the first major sale for the company since selling off its mobile handset business in 2013 to Microsoft for more than $7 billion.
