An impending new vision of first-person video game classic 'Doom'

LOS ANGELES -- Get ready to go to hell again with Doom.

id Software, the game studio that helped define the first-person shooter genre, has a new interpretation of its classic demon-filled action game in the works.

The game, due in spring 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PCs, has a familiar tale: you take the role of a space marine charged with ridding a Mars research facility of a demon invasion from Hell.

The Texas-based game studio released the original Doom in 1993 and earlier this month it became an entry in the Video Game Hall of Fame.

Gameplay reveals highly detailed environments alight with flames and fast-moving demons. "We've been inspired by the way those original Doom games made us feel when we played them," said executive producer Marty Stratton, who previewed the game Sunday night at publisher Bethesda Softworks showcase at the Dolby Theatre. "The foundation of any Doom experience past or present is unquestionably combat centered around three things: badass demons, big effing guns and moving really really fast."

Beyond the single-player campaign game, Doom has a new multiplayer mode and Doom SnapMap, free level creation software that lets players make and share game missions.

The new edition of Doom "provides the building blocks for hours of great entertainment," Stratton said. "But we wanted to provide more and allow our fans to do more."
