Tech Five: Yahoo updates its Fantasy Sports experience
Yahoo is stepping into a new domain: legal online gambling.
The company unveiled a new feature, Yahoo Sports Daily Fantasy, which will offer one-week fantasy sports contests for cash prizes. Shares of Yahoo were up nearly 4% in pre-market trading.
Let's take a look at the tech stocks to watch Thursday:
Yahoo (YHOO): Yahoo's new fantasy-sports app will give fans a platform to wager money against their friends as well as in bigger online tournaments. The company said the launch of this new feature will offer existing partners the opportunity to now reach fantasy sports players, an audience that grew 40% in the last year alone.
Alibaba (BABA): Asian stocks bounced back Thursday, collecting back some of Wednesday's sharp losses. Shares of Alibaba were up nearly 3% during Thursday morning, just two days after its stock hit a record low.
Palo Alto Network (PANW): Cyberstocks rallied after Wednesday's NYSE halt -- even though the glitch was not attributed to a cyber attack. Shortly after the NYSE halted trading around 11:30am, several cyber-security stocks, such as Palo Alto Network, saw spikes in their shares around noon. As of Thursday morning trading, shares of PANW were up more than 1%.
American Express (AXP): American Express launched a new online and mobile payment feature, Express Checkout. This fast digital checkout works similar to PayPal -- when customers see an Amex checkout button, they log in using AmEx online credentials, choose the card they want to use and then the transaction is complete. Amex shares were up nearly 2% Thursday morning.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): It has been a tough week for Advanced Micro Devices. Company shares were still down Thursday, after shares plummeted nearly 14% Monday due to a significant cut to its second-quarter sales outlook. As of morning trading, shares of AMD were down nearly 3%.
