Weekend listening: Google, Reddit hate, Pluto
LOS ANGELES — It was another huge week in tech--with a massive Amazon sale, huge Google profits, a big debate about what to do about online hate on forums like reddit and a flyby to Pluto, and using the Worldwide Web to view those photos down on earth.
So, as always, our collection of favorite podcasts from the week, for your weekend listening pleasure.
We begin with the human side of the online hate controversy. Recently the former CEO of reddit was forced to resign after a massive protest campaign, sparked by her attempts to clean up the community forum website. How bad is it to be on the receiving end of the comments? Take a listen to YouTube personality Justine Ezarik, a.k.a. iJustine.
Next up: Google's huge week, with Laura Mandaro, John Shinal and Elizabeth Weise.
Our #TalkingTech roundtable looked at the reddit controversy, Neil Young's decision to pull his music off the streaming services in a protest over low-fidelity, and the Amazon Prime sale.
Apple's new online radio station, Beats1, got a lot of attention recently for being a live, programmed online station. Did you know that DJ Skee is at it as well, with 65 live, online stations for his Dash Radio?
Finally, it took us 9.5 years to get there, and you would think that NASA would have found the time to create a really good mobile app for its New Horizons mission to Pluto. Really--there should be a killer app for that, I argue.
The #TalkingTech Roundtable airs at 8 p.m. ET LIVE every Thursday on TuneIn. This week we'll be doing the show from the Vidcon celebration of YouTube and online video in Anaheim.
