Tech Five: Nokia sells mapping business, part of larger business plan
Nokia is handing over its Here mapping service to a group of German automakers, AUDI AG, BMW Group, and Daimler AG (which owns Mercedes). The Finnish communications company will sell its mapping business for the equivalent $3.07 billion.
Let's take a look at the tech stocks to watch Monday:
Nokia (NOK): The sale of Here, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2016, comes about a year after Nokia handed over its smartphone and cellular handset business to Microsoft. This sale is part of the Nokia's larger goal of transforming into a networking company, according to CEO Rajeev Suri. Company shares were trading down Monday morning.
AT&T (T): Fresh off its $48.5 billion acquisition of DirecTV, the telecommunications giant is offering a plan to lure in new customers. For a $200/month plan, customers new to DirecTV or AT&T can get high definition and DVR service for up to four television receivers, along with unlimited talk and text for up to four wireless lines. Customers can also enjoy 10 GB of shareable wireless data along with the bundle. Company shares were slightly up Monday morning.
Yahoo (YHOO): Yahoo announced plans to acquire Polyvore, an online fashion startup. This merge is part of Yahoo's larger plan of accelerating its digital content growth strategy across social, mobile and native advertising platforms. Polyvore allows customers to peruse clothing from top brands and retailers around the world on one site.
Microsoft (MSFT): Shares of Microsoft were slightly up Monday morning as the company continues to roll out its Windows 10 update in phases. Microsoft announced Friday that more than 14 million devices are running the new operating software, which was released for download last Wednesday.
Facebook (FB): Facebook is starting the week in red, following a rough ride last week. The social media giant posted its earnings last week and the significant increase in spending worried investors, despite the company's increased revenue. Company shares were down nearly 1% Monday morning.
