Study breaks down popular emoji by state

New Yorkers love the Statue of Liberty, Hawaiians dig surfing, and Nevada residents enjoy the eggplant.

A study from smartphone keyboard maker SwiftKey attempts to discover what emojis each state uses more than the others. The results — dubbed The United States of Emoji — are based on analyzing more than one billion emoji typed into keyboards in the U.S.

The Statue of Liberty icon was the top emoji in New York, while the surfing emoji was more popular Hawaii. As for others states: the taxi emoji is popular in California, grapes were big in Texas, and the trumpet emoji is popular in Florida.

SwiftKey performed a similar study globally, analyzing emoji use across 16 different languages. Happy faces, sad faces and hearts are the three most popular emojis overall. In the U.S., emojis that were used most often include the eggplant, birthday cake, and a slice of pizza.
