Netflix builds out original programming with LEGO

The newest building block in Netflix's original programming strategy is LEGO.

Among the streaming video provider's upcoming new series, due in 2016, are two LEGO-related shows: LEGO: Bionicle: The Journey to One and LEGO Friends: The Power of Friendship.

Expected to land first in the first quarter of 2016,  LEGO: Bionicle: The Journey to One series is based on the action figure line. Then, scheduled for the second quarter of the year, LEGO Friends: The Power of Friendship will follow characters in their home of Heartlake City.

Among the other series planned: Dawn of the Croods (DreamWorks Animation) and Glitter Force from Saban Brands (Power Rangers) coming in December; Lost & Found Music Studios, about teenaged musicians, coming early 2016; Buddy Thunderstruck (American Greetings Entertainment), and Las Leyendas, an animated series based on a film trilogy from Mexico's Anima Estudios, in 2017.

“Roughly half of our 65 million members around the world regularly watch kids content and with the addition of these seven diverse original series we are continuing our strong investment in kids programming," said Andy Yeatman, Netflix's director of global kids content, said in a statement. “We know kids love Netflix and that’s in part because they never really outgrow us. We program and recommend new TV shows and movies from preschool through their teen years and into adulthood.”
