Nintendo reaches deal to develop mobile games

Might we see an official cameo from video game icon Mario on your smartphone or tablet soon?

Nintendo announced it reached a deal with mobile games company DeNA to build games for smartphones and tablets featuring the video game publisher's popular cast of characters.

Nintendo also points out games appearing on mobile will be original creations, not titles ported from the company's Wii U home console or mobile handheld 3DS.

It's not clear when the first game under the new partnership will be available, but both companies will launch an online membership service this fall.

Although this marks Nintendo's first time bringing its video game stars to smartphones and tablets, the franchises have appeared before through emulators mimicking popular Nintendo titles and making them playable on mobile devices.
