Director for 'Minecraft' movie revealed

An upcoming film based on the hit open-world game Minecraft has its director.

The game's creators, Mojang AB, confirmed Rob McElhenney, who's best known as a writer, actor and director on the series It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, will direct the film from Warner Bros.

McElhenney later confirmed the deal via Twitter:

Last year, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson, who has since left Mojang, revealed the company was working with Warner Bros. on a Minecraft film. Last year, Deadline reported the film would be live-action.

The big question remains what exactly will the plot look like? Minecraft is an open-world adventure where players explore and build. There's not a lot of back story involved.

That hasn't stopped the push to create Minecraft experiences with a deeper story. Video game publisher Telltale Games, the studio behind adventure series The Walking Dead, is working on an episodic series called Minecraft: Story Mode, launching later this year for PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox and mobile devices running Android and iOS.
