'Gears of War' remaster includes free access to full series

(Corrections and clarifications: This story has been updated to clarify players with Xbox 360 versions of the first four Gears of War titles can access digital versions on Xbox One, or unlock them through the Ultimate Edition.)

Here's a big incentive to snag a copy of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition: free access to every game in the Gears of War series.

Microsoft announced Monday Xbox One owners who play the Ultimate Edition -- a remastering of the original Gears of War -- between August 25 and December 31 will be able to play all four games in the series' history for free.

The four games -- Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Gears of War: Judgment -- will also be available on Xbox One as backwards compatible downloads for the Xbox One this fall.

Along with the remastered take on Gears of War, the Ultimate Edition will add new achievements, bonus maps and missions as well as access to a multiplayer beta for the upcoming sequel Gears of War 4.
