Disney scraps 'Infinity' video game franchise

It appears the toys-to-life video game series Disney Infinity will not earn a happy ending.

Disney Interactive confirmed it is cancelling Infinity, the franchise launched in 2013 combining physical figurines players could transport into a video game through a special portal.

The company is planning two more releases tied to Infinity later this year: a series of characters tied to the film Alice Through the Looking Glass this month; and a playset linked to Finding Dory available in June.

"Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that," said John Blackburn, senior vice president and general manager of the Infinity franchise. "We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it."

The first game featured characters from Disney films including Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles. Future releases featured Marvel's superheroes and Star Wars.

Players would place figurines on a portal and watch them appear in the video game, either in a specially themed adventure or in a Toy Box mode where players could create their own challenges and share them with friends.

During its quarterly results call Tuesday, Disney revealed it would take a $147 million charge related to Infinity, citing "lower results." Overall, revenues from the company's consumer products & interactive media division were down 2%.
