Report: Sony to introduce another PlayStation 4

A 4K-enabled PlayStation 4 might not be the only video game console Sony reveals during an event in New York next month.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the electronics giant will also unveil a standard version of the PS4 that will likely boast a slimmer design and cheaper price tag.

Sony will hold a press conference in New York on September 7, where they are widely expected to reveal a higher-end version of the PS4, code-named "Neo."

If both consoles launch this year, they will join PlayStation VR, Sony's debut in the virtual reality market. The headset will sell in the U.S. on October 13 at $399. Sony says the platform -- compatible with the PS4 -- will host 50 games between its first day of availability and the end of the year.

While Sony remains the frontrunner in video game consoles, it continues to face increased pressure from Microsoft's Xbox line. Microsoft launched the Xbox One S, which boasts a slimmer frame and lower price. The company is also working on its own high-end Xbox, dubbed "Project Scorpio."
