Tamagotchi gets a revival with Niantic game Peridot. Don't worry, this time it won't die.

Peridot, a video game from the makers of Pokémon Go, is using AR to energize audiences of all ages. Niantic launched the game officially on May 9, making it available for download both on Google Play and the App Store.

Inspired by the popular pet games of the late nineties and early aughts like Tamagotchi and Neopets, the app allows users to "hatch" a creature and watch it explore the world around them. Unlike Tamagotchi, the pet sims will keep their owner's company for however long without dying.

Players are presented at the start of the game with three eggs. Once they elect one, a "peridot" or "dot" will hatch. Each "dot" is entirely unique. In fact, the team behind the game did the math and determined the number of pet sims possible is as big as the number of stars in the universe.

Users will then be able to watch their little creature mature before it is eventually frozen at adulthood. Players can see their "dot" explore their shared surroundings by holding up their phones, whether it be a crowded city sidewalk or a cluttered living room.

“In our chaotic world, these creatures bring a dose of joy, whimsy, and comfort into our lives – it’s the delight of owning a real pet minus the mess,” Ziah Fogel, director of production for Peridot said in a press release.
