What to shop for in a TV and internet bundle
Here are some factors to consider when shopping for a TV and internet bundle deal.
Internet speeds
The FCC requires download speeds of 100 Mbps to be considered broadband service. Mid-sized households will need plans with download speeds of 300 to 500 Mbps to use around 10 to 15 or fewer wireless devices at the same time with little to no buffering.
Fully connected larger homes that game or use 15 to 20 or more Wi-Fi devices need a 1 GB plan or multi-gig internet package.
Live TV vs. streaming
Live TV typically needs faster Wi-Fi speeds. Consider how often you watch or stream live TV when you're purchasing a bundle package -- the cheapest option may not be the best one for your speed needs.
Fine print
Many TV and internet bundles come with a promotional period of a year or more. That means you should read the fine print, and expect prices to go up after the promotional period ends. You may be charged an early termination fee (ETF) if you decide to cancel the services early.
Mobile options
Bundling your cell phone plan with your internet and TV package can result in even more discounts and can also conveniently combine your bills into one monthly payment.
Availability/coverage
While there is likely only one cable TV provider in your area (due to agreements between companies to maintain specific regions), access to satellite TV and over a dozen streaming services provides a broader range of TV and internet bundle options.
Rural TV coverage
It's typically harder to access rural areas, which is why high-speed internet options are limited in those areas. In these cases, satellite TV from DIRECTV or DISH is the best option for accessing a variety of TV channels.
Satellite TV can be installed almost anywhere, as long as there is a clear view of the southern sky. Satellite TV is the ideal TV option for remote areas without access to cable, fiber or 5G internet because it is not dependent on buried, hardwired lines.
