Apple issues automated Mac update to fix critical bugs

Apple issued an automated update to its Mac computers to fix a "critical security issue" for its OS X operating system.

According to a Support page on Apple's website, the update applies a fix to software running the Network Time Protocol (NTP) service. Reuters reports before the fix, the flaw would have allowed hackers to remotely control machines.

In most cases, Apple asks permission of users to update their operating system, but Reuters notes this is the first time Apple automatically updated users' machines.

The update applies to Mac computers running Yosemite 10.10.1.
