Samsung Smart TVs to run on Tizen in 2015

Starting this year, Samsung's upcoming lineup of Smart TVs will run on the Tizen operating system, the electronics giant announced.

The new TVs will boast several new features, including a Sports option for watching live sports and checking stats simultaneously, access to the PlayStation Now service for on-demand games and Milk Video for discovering viral videos online.

"Building our Smart Platform around Tizen is a groundbreaking step towards a much more intelligent and integrated system," said Won Jin Lee, executive vice president of Samsung's Visual Display Business, in a statement.

The shift in smart TV platform is the latest move by Samsung to integrate the open-source Tizen operating system into more of its product. The company's line of Galaxy Gear smartwatches run on Tizen.

Meanwhile, Samsung postponed the launch of its first Tizen smartphone in July to grow the platform's app ecosystem, which would go up against giants including Apple's App Store and Google Play.

The announcement comes ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off next week in Las Vegas.
