Report: Apple delays reveal of streaming service

While it appears a revamped Apple TV will make an appearance next month, the company's long-reported streaming service is on hold.

According to Bloomberg, Apple will unveil the next version of its Apple TV set-top box at a Sept. 9 event, which will likely also showcase the next iPhone. However, Apple will postpone an announcement of a live TV streaming service as it continues to negotiate licensing deals.

Citing "people familiar with Apple's plans," the report says Apple continues to try to secure programming for the service. Also, the tech giant lacks "the computer network capacity in place to ensure a good viewing experience." The new service likely won't be revealed until 2016.

Rumors of a new-and-improved Apple TV have swirled for months. A March report from Buzzfeed claimed the new Apple TV would include a faster processor, overhauled operating system and support for digital voice assistant Siri.

The device was reportedly going to be revealed at June's Worldwide Developers Conference before being pushed back to fall.

Apple's entrance into streaming TV arrives as cable and network programmers brace for the rise in cord cutting. Companies including Sony with PlayStation Vue and Dish TV with Sling introduced smaller bundles boasting local, live TV channels and other popular cable channels for a lower cost.

Networks have also launched their own standalone offerings, notably premium networks HBO and Showtime.
