Phone go for a swim? How to save your soaking smartphone.

So your phone took a dip in a pool, puddle, or worse, the toilet? Well, don’t fret!
Water plus smartphones used to equal instant death for many devices. Happily, that’s no longer always the case.
Many iPhones, Pixel, and Galaxy devices are water-resistant and can survive exposure to liquid (yes, even beer) without calamity.
But smartphones aren’t entirely waterproof, and liquid can seep in through some of the small cracks you can’t see.
Thankfully there are some simple steps you can take to save your phone next time it takes a plunge.
To see the different ways to fix a water-damaged phone, watch this video.
What to do if your phone gets wet
If your phone gets wet, there are a few things you need to do before trying to use it again:
- Turn it off
- If it is in a case, remove the case
- Dry the phone and case
- If possible, take out the SIM card and battery
- Tap your phone to remove any liquid from ports - this is most effective with the charging port facing down
- Let it dry for 24-48 hours
Depending on how wet your phone gets, you may only need to use a couple of these steps before it is safe to use again.
Phone in rice?
You’ve probably heard about putting a wet device in rice, but there is actually a much better option that doesn’t involve starchy food: silica gel packets!
Yes, the little packets tucked inside a new pair of shoes. If you don't have any lying around your house, you can purchase them in bulk online.
All you have to do is put a few of them in an airtight container with your phone and seal it up!
Waterproof phone pouch
If you’re planning a trip to the beach or on a boat, consider buying a waterproof pouch to keep your phone in - it’s a bonus if the pouch also floats!
This keeps your phone protected, and on the surface, in case it tries to go for a swim.
Some pouches even allow you to use your phone underwater, so you can easily level up your vacation with underwater pictures or videos!
