Grab a Drooler Cooler and settle in. Following the series premiere last week, the second episode of Monsters at Work is here, and through it we learn more about the team members of the Monsters Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT). From Cutter, the gruff, pyrotechnically eager mechanic to Roto, the tiny, angry puffball who serves as Duncan’s emotional support animal, the monsters of MIFT are a diverse bunch who are ready to bring the laughs.
Written by Bart Jennett and directed by Shane Galvin, the second episode of the series brings Billy Crystal's Mike to the forefront as a teacher of a comedy class, and features Mindy Kaling, Henry Winkler, and Ben Feldman's characters ‘learning’ about comedy alongside him.
Monsters at Work will air every Wednesday, and episodes 1 and 2 are currently available on Disney+.

What happens in the second episode of Monsters at Work?
In the second episode, Tylor’s proposed slogan “It’s Laughter We’re After” has been slung up over the original sign over the Monsters, Inc. doors. Tylor’s mom (played by Aisha Tyler), drives Tylor to his second day of work, where he is greeted by Fritz and Val. Fritz immediately flirts with Tylor’s mom, who is underwhelmed by MIFT’s employees. Upon heading in for work, Fritz and the MIFT members greet Tylor with a skit and a speech about how they are the ‘girdles’ upon which the factory stands, the “monsters behind the monsters.” Tylor is put through a small ceremony that echoes the "Ring of Fire" from Finding Nemo, initiating him into the ranks of the MIFTers. Fritz gives him his first tool, a wrench, and Tylor tries, and fails, to wrench a nut as the MIFT team chants around him.
Meanwhile, throughout the factory, power outages are still occurring, with the few Jokesters working overtime to power Monstropolis. Mike Wazowski has been working nonstop to generate laughs, with Sully taking over the role of assistant for Mike—an adorable reversal of their roles from the original film. In order to stay alert for the comedy class he’s teaching later, Mike takes an energy drink from Smitty and Needleman.
In the basement, Duncan (whose desk has a plaque on it that reads “Official Assistant Supervisor”) continues to antagonize Tylor, taunting him with a task he can’t complete. Flustered after his mistakes, Tylor leaves for Mike’s comedy class.
Mike’s comedy class is chaotic, with Mike still suffering from the effects of his energy drink. He launches into a cut-off diatribe about his personal comedy history, as the entire MIFT team arrives to join Tylor. Val very sweetly discusses her time in an improv troupe, introducing Tylor to the idea of “yes, and.” After the class, Mike returns to the Laugh Floor, where he immediately gets back to work. However, the power outages plaguing the factory cause Mike to become trapped within his door. MIFT is brought in to save Mike, and Tylor establishes his place on the team during the crisis by providing the strength necessary to wrench the nut and keep Mike safe.
Mike is returned to the group (at which point he immediately, finally falls asleep), and the MIFT team celebrates Tylor’s victory. Meanwhile, Banana Bread leaves MIFT for the Laugh Floor (after the reveal that his actual name is Winchester), leaving Tylor with the hope that he, too, might become a Jokester. In the meantime, he comforts Fritz about Banana Bread’s departure, and seems to settle into his role among the MIFT team members.
At the end of the episode, we cut away to a title card for “Mike’s Comedy Class” and get a truly delightful song from Mike, who sings about the importance of treating kids with respect while making them laugh—a common theme in the Monsters, Inc. universe, and one that will likely be repeated as the series progresses.
