What is Big Hero 6 about?

This is a visionary piece of filmmaking—distinctive and colorful, family-friendly, and a thoughtful work of science fiction with a superhero twist. Based on a team of Marvel Comics characters going by the same name, Big Hero 6 is a story of familial love, the all-consuming nature of revenge, and the power of friendship.

Young robotics whiz Hiro Hamada participates in underground robot fights in his spare time. He also develops high-tech programmable “microbots” for his school’s science fair, and generally shows enormous promise as a student and inventor. After tragedy strikes at the science fair, killing his older brother, Hiro falls into a deep depression. But a gift from his brother, the inflatable robot Baymax, lifts his spirits long enough for the two of them to discover that someone has been reproducing the advanced microbots he’d entered in the doomed science fair.

With Baymax and their friends by his side, Hiro sets out to find the masked villain responsible for the fire that killed his brother and bring them to justice.

“The best scenes are the comical interactions between Hiro and Baymax, and the poignant moments when Hiro grapples with grief,” USA Today’s Claudia Puig said in 2014. “With Guardians of the Galaxy and now Big Hero 6, it’s been a banner year for fresh Marvel Comics superhero sagas. Like Guardians’ leafy gentle giant Groot, the kindly Baymax looms large as a winner for kids and adults alike.”
