What is Inside Out about?
This 2015 Pixar feature stars Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Lewis Black, Bill Hader, and Mindy Kaling, as emotions personified in the mind of a young girl, Riley, trying to cope with the stress of moving across the country to a new life in San Francisco.
After a bad, tearful first day at her new school, Joy tries to suppress Riley’s memory of the event, but the result is catastrophic, sending Joy and Sadness deep into the recesses of Riley’s memory. This, unfortunately, leaves Anger, Fear, and Disgust at the helm, and Riley runs away from home, longing to return to her old life in Minnesota.
The animated picture grossed $857 million globally, and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature, and numerous other accolades.
“Fear’s jittery neuroses and Joy’s shiny nature will capture the hearts of smaller audience members, yet Inside Out is heartbreaking at times for adults, especially parents,” USA Today’s Brian Truitt said in his review. “It reminds that time is fleeting and that children grow up quickly—the top-hatted, quasi-cat/elephant Bing Bong (Richard Kind), Riley’s former imaginary friend, cries candy tears, but it’s adults who will need tissues as they see his story arc play out.”
