What is The Little Mermaid about?
This Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale tells the romantic fish-out-of-water story of a mermaid named Ariel, who falls for a human prince named Eric. Ariel’s father, King Triton, warns her that the surface world—contact between between merfolk and humans—is forbidden.
A powerful witch named Ursula offers to turn Ariel into a human, but the spell comes with a price: She must receive true love’s kiss within the span of three days, or else she’ll be turned back into a mermaid forever. When Ariel is nearly successful, Ursula transforms herself this time, and enchants the handsome prince; the two arrange to be married right away.
Ariel and her aquatic allies manage to free Eric from Ursula’s spell, but the witch becomes enraged, and summons a violent storm in hopes of killing Ariel. But Eric loves the young mermaid too much to let that happen.
