What is Mary Poppins about?

Mary Poppins is a 1964 musical based on the book series by P. L. Travers. The only Walt Disney production to earn a Best Picture Oscar nomination during Walt Disney’s lifetime, Mary Poppins was released to universal acclaim, combining live-action and animated sequences set to a soundtrack by the Sherman Brothers (“It’s a Small World”).

George Banks is in need of a new nanny for his children, Jane and Michael. Mr. Banks works at, yes, a London bank; his wife, Winifred, is part of the women’s suffrage movement. When the new nanny, Mary Poppins, arrives, she does so by flying in—using only an umbrella. She has a number of magical items and talents, and is friends with a carefree trickster named Bert, who sells balloons, sweeps chimneys, and does chalk drawings, which Poppins brings to life using her magic.

This is a strange but simple story that suggests we all ought to spend more time with our families and less time stressing about work and money. A lovely thought.

The film stars Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Hermione Baddeley, Reta Shaw, Karen Dotrice, Matthew Garber, Elsa Lanchester, Arthur Treacher, Reginald Owen, and Ed Wynn.
