What is Monsters University about?

Pixar’s 2013 prequel to Monsters, Inc. brings back Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger in their roles as monsters living in a world powered by human screams.

Michael “Mike” Wazowski and James P. “Sulley” Sullivan are “scare majors” at Monsters University, aspiring to become the accomplished scarers seen in the original 2001 film. The two classmates grapple with campus politics, a harsh dean, and the ethics of cheating (during the school’s “Scare Games” competition). The two would-be scarers learn some hard lessons in this one, and things don’t quite pan out the way you’d expect, but the duo does, at least learn how to make a good scare.

“It’s an amusing and amiable addition to Pixar’s roster of animated coming-of-age stories,” Claudia Puig said in her review. “While not likely to generate tears like Toy Story 3, it’s no sputtering Cars 2, either. University is an enjoyable if slight prequel to the original, about a pair of colorful bogeymen whose job is to enter through closet-door portals and terrify children into screaming.”
