What is Up about?
Fair warning: Up’s going to tear your heart out. It’s also one of the most honest, moving, gorgeous-looking pictures in animation history.
Life has not gone according to plan for Carl Fredricksen, a 78-year-old retired balloon salesman. The home he built with his soulmate, Ellie, no longer has anything left to offer him, and so he’s decided to make his escape—by attaching thousands of helium balloons to the roof of his house. Where will he go? His childhood hero, Charles F. Muntz, is said to have gone searching for an exotic animal in a place called Paradise Falls, so that becomes Carl’s destination. Along the way, Fredricksen discovers the young boy scout he’d met earlier that day has become a stowaway aboard his makeshift airship, and later finds a dog named Dug, who can speak perfect English. It’s a surreal, heartfelt, and largely original story that people of all ages will enjoy, at least once the crying’s over.
“This is the essential Pixar movie: It’s made up of a lot of disparate pieces that shouldn’t fit together, except for their emotion. Imagine pitching this story to anyone else, not just in Hollywood but to anyone you know. Who wants to see a movie about an old man, an outcast kid, a talking dog, and another old man as a villain? This movie should not have worked. But it did,” USA Today’s Kelly Lawler said in 2015. “Hats off to you, Pixar. This is your best film, and one of the best films ever made, if you’re asking us.”
Up includes voice-over performances by Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, Jordan Nagai, Bob Peterson, Delroy Lindo, Jerome Ranft, John Ratzenberger, Elie Docter, and Jeremy Leary. It features a score by Michael Giacchino.
