The Kingdom of Wakanda will return in an all-new Disney+ series. According to Deadline, Black Panther writer-director Ryan Coogler has just inked a five-year overall deal with the studio. Through his own Proximity Media, Coogler will develop a number of new television series, the first of which is a Black Panther spinoff separate from the forthcoming Black Panther 2.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige announced at Disney Investor Day 2020 that the role of T’Challa, the Black Panther, would not be recast following the unexpected loss of actor Chadwick Boseman at the age of 43. “His portrayal,” Feige said, “is iconic, and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past.”

While no release date has been given for the upcoming Wakanda-set TV show, Coogler’s Black Panther 2 is slated for release on July 8, 2022. The big-screen sequel is said to focus on “the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.” Michael B. Jordan—who played the vengeful Erik Killmonger in the original Black Panther—has said he’d be open to returning to the Marvel universe in some capacity, though he’s currently working on his directorial debut, Creed 3.

The critically acclaimed WandaVision, Marvel’s first live-action Disney+ series, is already available to stream. Another MCU show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is slated to hit Disney+ in March, followed by the miniseries Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston.

In order to stream the upcoming Wakanda TV series, you’ll need a Disney+ subscription, which costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 for a full year.

What is the new Black Panther show about?

Specifics about the new Kingdom of Wakanda series are still up in the air, but we know that there’s a rich history of Wakandan lore in the Marvel Comics universe—and the original Black Panther film offered no end of possibilities about where future stories might go. From the dazzling spirit realm where T’Challa was briefly reunited with his late father to the sacred metallic ore “vibranium,” there’s a lot more to the world of Wakanda than your typical masked-hero tale.

“Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,” Disney’s Bob Iger told Deadline in a statement. “With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful, and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment.”

“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company,” Coogler said. “Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden, and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella.”
