Twitter considered a News app, according to App Store

Corrections and clarifications: The update from News to Social Networking happened nearly a year ago, not recently as our report might suggest.

If you head over to Apple's App Store and review the top free social networking apps, you might notice one big name isn't on the list: Twitter.

It's not because Twitter isn't popular. According to Apple's App Store, Twitter is classified as a News app.

The change was noted by TechCrunch back in April 2016. Twitter sits atop the free apps chart in News, instead of blending in with a crowded field of apps in the Social Networking category. Overall, Twitter lingers around the top 25 apps, according to analytics service App Annie.

Twitter has introduced new features and ramped up abuse monitoring to draw more people to its service. Last quarter, Twitter reported 319 million monthly active users, up 4% from the year before.
