Twitter rolls out Lite version for mobile browsers

Twitter introduced a Lite version of its social media platform on Thursday, aimed at users operating on slower mobile networks or seeking to conserve storage space on their smartphones.

Twitter Lite is available on mobile browsers, by accessing mobile.twitter.com. Twitter says the Lite version will offer the core experience, but minimize the amount of data used and load more quickly. There's also a Data Saver mode where users can see previews of photos or videos, then tapping them to fully load.

On Android devices, Twitter Lite will support push notifications and the option to view Twitter offline.

"With Twitter Lite, we are making Twitter more accessible to millions of people—all you need is a smartphone or tablet with a browser," said Twitter product manager Patrick Traughber.

Along with making Twitter more accessible when experiencing connection issues with your smartphone, the addition of Lite opens the door to reaching emerging markets in Latin America and Africa. Twitter says it's partnering with Vodafone in India to promote Twitter Lite for sports scores.
