Just in time for Halloween — Snapchat's dancing hot dog costume
LOS ANGELES — Just in time for Halloween, you can be a dancing hot dog.
The augmented reality dancing dog that mixed in real-life video was a surprise summer viral hit on the red-hot communication app Snapchat. Now, instead of appearing in a Snapchat video, you can become the hot dog by donning the $79.95 two-piece costume.
The costume is for sale on Amazon page of Snapchat parent Snap, qualifying as the company's second physical product to be hawked there since last year's Spectacles video sunglasses appeared.
When the $129.95 Spectacles were first sold in 2016, Snap chose the untraditional method of dropping them into a kiosk in unannounced places, for one day only, which resulted in long lines and scarcity of product. The product has since gone on sale to a wider audience, via a Snap website and on Amazon as well.
The dancing digital weiner was unique in that you could so silly things like sit at your company desk ignoring work, while the strutting dog did his moves, or dance around you as you walked down the street. It was so novel, many people started sharing these memes immediately.
Snap has fun with the product description on the Amazon page, touting the "convenient head/hand slits for easy access to cups, touch screens, and turntables!" and allowing that the costume is "made of 100% beef, but never starts it!"
Snap didn't respond to requests for comment.
