Obama's day: The Islamic State and Ebola

Two global challenges dominate President Obama's schedule Tuesday: The rise of the Islamic State and the spread of the Ebola virus.

In the morning at the White House, Obama will meet with Gen. John Allen, the envoy who is responsible for organizing a global coalition to help roll back the Islamic State from positions in Iraq and Syria.

In the afternoon, Obama travels to Atlanta for an Ebola briefing at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The president will also announce an expansion of U.S. efforts to help contain the disease in West Africa.

Obama "will receive a briefing on the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa, discuss the U.S. response and thank the scientists, doctors and health care workers helping those affected by disease at home and around the world," said the White House schedule.

CDC officials will also brief Obama on reports of respiratory illnesses in several states in the Midwest.

The president then travels to Tampa, where on Wednesday he will briefed by the U.S. Central Command. It is coordinating the counterterrorism plan against the Islamic State.
