Obama's day: A visit from Ukraine
President Obama has a foreign affairs day Thursday, welcoming new ambassadors and the president of Ukraine to the White House.
Later in the afternoon, Obama will help raise campaign money at a Democratic National Committee "roundtable" in Washington, D.C.
Obama's afternoon meeting with President Petro Poroshenko is a show of solidarity as Ukraine's government fights pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country.
The U.S. president will speak with Poroshenko about "efforts to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in eastern Ukraine as well as our continued support for Ukraine's struggle to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity," says the White House schedule.
Poroshenko will visit the White House after addressing a joint session of Congress.
The United State and allies have hit Russia with a series of economic sanctions over President Vladimir Putin's support for separatists in Ukraine.
The Obama-Poroshenko meeting "will highlight the United States' firm commitment to stand with Ukraine as it pursues liberal democracy, stability, and prosperity," says the schedule.
Earlier in the day, Obama will participate in an ambassador credentialing ceremony in the Oval Office. His guests:
• Mohammad Ziauddin, ambassador of Bangladesh
• Eerik Marmei, ambassador of Estonia
• Francisco Roberto Altschul Fuentes, ambassador of El Salvador
• Emanuel Arturo Gonzalez Revilla Lince, ambassador of Panama
• Roman Macaya Hayes, ambassador of Costa Rica
• Gerard Araud, ambassador of France
• Igor Alberto Pangrazio Vera, ambassador of Paraguay
