White House transcript omits Obama joke
The official White House transcript of a President Obama speech Monday left out a joke that Obama told on himself about late bills.
Speaking at a Democratic Party fundraiser in his hometown of Chicago, Obama made a crack about old bills at his house:
"One of the nice things about being home is actually that it's a little bit like a time capsule. Because Michelle and I and the kids, we left so quickly that there's still junk on my desk, including some unpaid bills (laughter) — I think eventually they got paid — but they're sort of stacked up. And messages, newspapers and all kinds of stuff."
The White House transcript left out the part about "unpaid bills" (and the payment of them):
"Michelle and I and the kids, we left so quickly that there's still junk on my desk, including some — newspapers and all kinds of stuff."
Said White House spokesman Josh Earnest: "There was a problem with the recording of the event."
UPDATE: Early Tuesday, the White House sent out a "corrected" transcript in which the bill comments are declared "inaudible." The remarks can be clearly be heard on a tape recorder carried by a reporter.
