Obama's day: National security and the Islamic State

President Obama spends Friday with national security aides on the challenges of the Islamic State.

Obama travels to the State Department for a special meeting of the National Security Council on the Islamic State. Also known as ISIL, the militant group controls large parts of Iraq and Syria, and has threatened western interests.

The United States has conducted air strikes against Islamic State positions, and is preparing to train Iraqi and Syrian forces to carry out operations on the ground.

In addition to the Islamic State, Obama is expected to receive updates on the new Ebola case in New York City.

Obama spoke Thursday night with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and offered federal help on the Ebola response.
