GOP staffer resigns over comments about Obama daughters

The communications director for a Republican congressman says she is resigning over Facebook comments about President Obama's daughters, NBC News is reporting.

Elizabeth Lauten, the communications director for U.S. Rep. Steve Fincher, R-Tenn., has been criticized throughout the weekend for her comments.

After last week's pre-Thanksgiving turkey pardoning ceremony, Lauten took to Facebook on Friday to assail presidential daughters Malia and Sasha Obama for their alleged lack of interest.

"Try showing a little class," Lauten wrote, adding: "Rise to the occasion. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at the bar. And certainly don't make faces during televised, public events."

The post went viral over the weekend, and Lauten apologized.
