Obama's day: Broadband in Iowa

Cyber issues again dominate President Obama's schedule Wednesday as he travels to Iowa to talk about broadband policy.

During a visit to Cedar Falls, Obama "will attend a fiber optic splicing demonstration and deliver remarks laying out new steps to increase access to affordable, high-speed broadband across the country," says the White House schedule.

Obama will call on the Federal Communications Commission to override state laws that discourage competition among phone and cable companies that provide high-speed Internet service.

The president will also announce that his administration will provide financial and technical assistance to local governments that want to provide high-speed service to their citizens.

Obama has devoted his week to cybersecurity issues, speaking Monday on efforts to block identity theft and Tuesday on information sharing between the government and private industry to prevent cybercrimes.

Cybersecurity and privacy issues will be themes in next week's State of the Union Address, Obama says.
