Obama meets wife of pastor jailed in Iran

President Obama met Wednesday with the wife and two children of a Christian pastor who has been imprisoned in Iran for more than two years.

"I am extremely thankful the president took the time to meet with our family and told us that securing the release of my husband is a top priority," said Naghmeh Abedini in a statement.

Her husband, Saeed Abedini, an American citizen, was arrested in Iran in 2012.

Obama administration officials confirmed that the president met with Naghmeh Abedini during his visit Wednesday to Boise, Idaho, where the Abedini family lives.

"The United States remains concerned about the unjust detention of several Americans in Iran, including Mr. Abedini," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

The American Center for Law and Justice, which represents the Abedini family, sent out Mrs. Abedini's statement:

"The president was focused and gracious — showing concern to me and my children. I know that this meeting could not have occurred without prayer and I am grateful to the many people around the country and world who continue to pray for Saeed's release.

"The president repeated his desire to do all that he can to bring Saeed home. That means the world to me and my children and has given me a renewed sense of hope."
